The love of a sepia-tinged black and white print that translates vintage goodness was my goal in creating 'La Creme'. I wanted to highlight a Botanical from Monet's exquisitely curated gardens in the way a gem designer would cut, polish, and set a favored stone in the perfect setting.

Forest art - Modern Nature photography

On a weekend trip to Napa Valley,  I was totally inspired by the mighty Oaks surrounding what can only be described as our lodging in a perfect treehouse. I wanted to transform our condo walls to recreate this sensation of modern treehouse life. A series of oversized Giclee' Canvas' and Fine art photographs printed on a rich Metallic art paper became reality. Custom sizing, by request.

I originally trained at Chicago’s American Academy of Art. The Professional Photographers of America awarded images in the International, Southwest Regional and State Print Competitions with judge’s comments ranging from “Vibrant color, great depth, exciting print”, and “Amazing visualization with personal impact.”

My work is in private collections from Helsinki, Finland; Sydney, Australia; Sussex, England; Canada; Newport Beach; San Francisco; Chicago; New York; Washington; Colorado; Connecticut; Massachusetts, Maine and New Orleans.

I photograph Italy, France, City Novellas and Nature to translate a moment, a feeling, a story, or a sacred place. The images are phase one of the creative process. I stay true to my first glance at the subject, as in a quick sketch, or I apply painterly treatments in the digital darkroom. The photographs are influenced by the Masters of light and color.

What are your goals?

My goals are to build a brand that includes Fine art photography for Home Decor and Corporate Art markets. The long-term goal is to secure multiple licenses for image licensing. I am interested in interior design inquiries, gallery representation, and projects that include images for paper products.

What are you working on now?

I have twelve works currently ‘under development’ for image licensing. So, I’m doing the Happy Dance and dreaming of a medium format camera (with bated breath!) I study, observe and refine. There’s so much more to say, to explore, to illustrate.

My Etsy Shop SERANTONI Designs is a joy. It’s an evolving work-in-progress, where I receive audience feedback and meet fascinating global artisans and entrepreneurs.

What inspires you?

Since childhood, the art world inspired me — from Art History; Classical and Jazz music; Literature and Theatre; David Hockney’s Set Designs and landscapes; the energy of a great urban city; travel adventures; and the power of nature. The trees, the ocean, Alaskan wilderness, all renew your perspective.

The little miracles of art inspire me. As a former Art & Music Therapy Volunteer, I cherish the memories of children opening up — communicating and laughing — when painting, drawing or music is introduced (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Banner Desert Medical Center – Pediatrics/Oncology).

Stories of successful entrepreneurs inspire me. When artists can balance the art with commerce and begin with nothing but talent, courage, drive and a dream – I study and learn from them.

As a true adventurer, this week’s artist has a unique gift for capturing fantastic and stunning places and spaces throughout the world with her camera. Mary Serantoni of Serantoni Designs is in love with telling stories by capturing mystical landscapes and city streets with her lens. We spoke with Mary and asked her a few questions about her magical journeys that lead to these wonderful photos:

How did you get started shooting?

I have been involved in Fine Art and performing arts throughout my life. My interest in Photography emerged while at the American Academy of Art, and as Photographers Assistant at a Chicago performing arts company. It was on Honeymoon in Italy with daily lessons by Dr. Dez, when my obsession became apparent.

What equipment do you use?

I use a NIKON D700, and occasionally borrow the NIKON D3. Fave Lens: NIKON 24-70mm f/2.8. Post-processing tools are my beloved Mac, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Where does your inspiration come from?

It comes from various sources:
Music – from Classical to Jazz and everything in-between.
Urban cityscapes, streetscenes, and the poetry of Nature.
Prolific Artists such as Edward Hopper, Cezanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Monet, Miro, Klimt, John Singer Sargent, Toulouse Lautrec, O’Keefe, Picasso’s line drawings and David Hockney’s set designs.

What is your favorite piece of work? 

I don’t have a favorite piece, as each image brings me back to that original Aha! moment in time. I do love to track what pieces speak to people, and cherish their little notes of gratitude.

Any other cool facts about yourself as an artist?

As a photographer, I am constantly studying Light and striving to balance the Science with the Art. I create Stories via Fine art photography for Dreamers and lovers of great escapism, Travelogue romanticists, and connoisseurs of the painterly approach by Old World Masters.
